From yesterday to today

The Chartreux is a very old breed with a turbulent history. Contrary to legend, the Chartreux was never bred by the monks of the same name. The first blue cats were probably brought from Syria to the West by the Crusaders in the Middle Ages. The term “Chartreux” appeared in the 18th century to designate blue-grey cat fur, appreciated by furriers! At the beginning of the 20th century, when we began to take an interest in the Chartreux as a breed in its own right, it practically disappeared. Two sisters, Christine and Suzanne Léger then undertake a reconstruction from the few existing colonies, in particular that of Belle-Île.The offer not being sufficient to meet the demand, there was a great confusion between the Chartreux and the blue British Shorthair, another breed of blue cat with short hair and golden eyes. In the face of this danger, a few keen breeders have sought virgin lines of British. They gradually reestablished the breed which is no longer threatened today.

His look

The Chartreux is a sturdy cat with thick, slightly woolly fur. Seen from the forehead, its head forms a trapezium, wide at the base and narrow at the top. The contours are rounded, especially in males. The profile is very slightly concave with a high, flat forehead and a straight nose. The ears, set high on the head, are narrow at the base and slightly rounded. The eyes, yellow to orange in color, are large and expressive with the upper end slightly raised upwards. Strong, thick and short, the neckline is muscular. The body is robust with broad shoulders and a deep chest. Dense, the fur is moderately short. Thanks to her tight undercoat, she is practically waterproof. The only color accepted is blue in all its shades, from light grey-blue to deep grey-blue.

His company

Despite the somewhat teddy-like appearance given by its soft, woolly fur, the Chartreux is not a stuffed animal. He is a lively, robust and agile cat who had to fight to survive and he has remnants of this willful temperament. It is also said of him that he is particularly intelligent. It is perhaps this intelligence that allowed him to adapt very quickly to modern life in an apartment and to become a perfect companion cat appreciated by the whole family.
